Formula 1 Extends Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix Through 2032

Formula 1 has confirmed a major long-term commitment to racing in Spain, announcing a multi-year extension with the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya that secures Grand Prix weekends in 2028, 2030, and 2032, alongside the already scheduled 2026 event.

Beginning this year, the race will also adopt a refreshed title: the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. The renewed agreement follows a period of significant investment at the historic venue.

Recent upgrades include the Circuit Rooftop, a new hospitality complex overlooking turns 9, 10, and 11 and the entry to the main straight, as well as the installation of solar panels across the facility. These improvements reflect the circuit’s broader strategy to modernize infrastructure, enhance sustainability, and elevate the fan experience.

Built in 1991 as part of the development programme for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, the circuit has long been a staple of the Formula 1 calendar.

Its blend of high- and low-speed corners has produced countless memorable moments, including Max Verstappen’s maiden Grand Prix victory in 2016. The 2025 edition drew an impressive 300,000 spectators, with Oscar Piastri taking the win ahead of teammate Lando Norris.

Other current drivers with victories at the venue include Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, both of whom have enjoyed success on the Catalan asphalt.

In recent years, organizers have placed a strong emphasis on community engagement and fan-focused initiatives. A fan festival held in Barcelona’s iconic Plaça de Catalunya has become a popular tradition, running for the past two seasons and set to return in 2026.

As part of Formula 1’s evolving calendar strategy, the Barcelona event will rotate with the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. Under the new arrangement, Barcelona will host races in 2026, 2028, 2030, and 2032, while Spa will feature in 2026, 2027, 2029, and 2031.

Formula 1 President & CEO Stefano Domenicali expressed his enthusiasm for the renewed partnership: “Barcelona is an incredible city, and the Formula 1 fans there always welcome us with such passion, so I am delighted that we will continue to race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for years to come.”

“The team have invested heavily in the circuit and hosted fantastic fan festivals in recent years, so we look forward to seeing how they continue to develop the experience, both for attendees at the race and for the city as a whole.”

“I would like to thank Salvador Illa, President of the Government of Catalunya, Pol Gibert, CEO of Circuits de Catalunya SL and General Secretary of the Department of Business and Employment for their unwavering commitment to hosting Formula 1, and Oriol Sagrera, the former CEO of Circuits de Catalunya SL and former General Secretary of the Department of Business and Employment, who was key to securing the renewal.”

Pol Gibert, CEO of Circuits de Catalunya SL and General Secretary of the Department of Business and Employment, emphasized the significance of the agreement for the region.

“We welcome the renewal of the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Catalonia, at least until 2032. We would like to express our gratitude to Formula 1 for the trust placed in the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and in the region over all these years.”

“This renewal is the result of a strong relationship and close collaboration, and represents a very important step in further consolidating Catalonia as a key fixture on the international calendar.”

“Formula 1 generates an economic impact of more than €300 million per edition, but above all it is a strategic event that helps project Catalonia worldwide as a country capable of hosting top-level sporting competitions.”
