Commons:Curator
Curator is a free upload tool of image sequences from Mapillary. It can be used from here. Once you are logged in to Commons, just click Login with Wikimedia Commons button, and then click Allow in the dialog box that will show. At this moment, you will be ready to use the tool.
Procedure
[edit]The process of uploading image sequences is divided into five parts.

The first step is to retrieve the sequence key that contains the images to be uploaded. When the key is entered, the batch is loading. To access the key, zoom into the map until green dots appear. Click one of the wanted sequence. After that, push the button the the dots on the right. The section Advanced reveals the sequence ID.
Once the images in the key have been retrieved, the desired images can be selected. If large quantities are planned, it is advisable to review the selection and deselect blurred, shaky, or otherwise impaired photos (this may also include images that are not acceptable on Commons for copyright reasons, for example). The image collection can be displayed as a list or grid. Images can be selected individually, all together, or all on one page. Each page can display 10, 25, 50, or 100 list entries or 24, 48, 72, or 96 grid entries. Very large image stacks (>3000) take a little longer to load. Each image can be viewed before uploading to Mapillary. This can be helpful if the preview is too small.
Editing is an important step because it affects many files and has a significant impact on the systematic structuring of the data sets. The Title Template is the template for the file name on Commons. The template should be designed in such a way that no file name conflicts arise. This can happen if a timestamp is missing in the file name. The name should also be chosen in such a way that the chronological sequence of images is ensured by an alphabetical order, so that the sequence of images on Commons can be viewed in the correct order. It is recommended to add parameters such as the image ID, the name of the creator, and the camera name. However, the camera name is not always specified in the source material. One possible template is the predefined Mapillary ({{mapillary.photo.sequence}}) ({{mapillary.user.username}}) {{captured.date}} {{captured.time_ms}}.jpg or the more detailed Mapillary ({{mapillary.user.username}}) {{captured.date}} {{captured.hours}}H{{captured.minutes}}M{{captured.seconds}}S{{captured.milliseconds}} ({{mapillary.photo.id}} at {{mapillary.photo.sequence}}).jpg. Variables can be added per drag and drop to the template, which is also previewed. When the desired template is done, click on "Apply" on the right.
The fallback section allows you to enter wikitext. The main focus is on assigning categories. It is recommended that all images with the same sequence ID be included in the same category. This can be done using [[Category:Photographs of <AREA> from Mapillary (<SEQUENCE ID>)]]. Area represents the location through which the image series runs. This can be a city, an island, a mountain, or an administrative district. All newly created location categories should be categorized in [[Category:Photographs of <COUNTRY/TERRITORY> from Mapillary]]
. It is also recommended to categorize by country and date. So if the photos were taken in Greenland, the category [[Category:Greenland photographs taken on YYYY-MM-DD]] is recommended. If this is the case, Exclude from date category can be checked. Overwriting the license should only be considered by experienced users if necessary. A template, such as one for freedom of panorama, can also be added to the Categories text field.
All such categories should descend from Category:Photographs from Mapillary by country. Categories by city are recommended to be also included in Category:Photographs from Mapillary by city, so all cities can be read in alphabetical order.
Content for individual files can be added below the text fields.
When you click on Preview Edits, all files are displayed with their respective titles and wikitext. When you click on Upload, the upload process begins and you can monitor its progress.
Near the header of the web page, you see the 5 steps. You can click on any section anytime.
The upload status shows the status of the files. Successful files are marked green and can be seen on Commons. Don't forget to create the category for the image sequence π.
When the files are uploaded, you can see them with their file page. By clicking on Past uploads in the top right corner of the header, you can see the most recent batch processes, including those from other users. You can also use this menu to cancel your own batches that have already started. As of 2026-02-02, batches are processed one after another. So if you are waiting for your batch to be processed, another one may be in progress now.
Checklist
[edit]The following checklist can be used for upload workflows:
β Find the sequence ID you want to upload
β Select the images you want to upload, avoid blurry, unsharp or other low-quality images and Commons-incompatible images like images with copyrighted billboards. Pay attention to images from countries without freedom of panorama.
β Enter an appropiate title template, apply it and add all relevant categories. Hit the checkbox below, if necessary.
β Preview the input and make chances before uploading.
β Review the upload process and check if all files are uploaded.
β If you experience an error, you may execute changes via VisualFile Change.
Additional features
[edit]If you enter a sequence ID that has already uploaded files, they are marked with their link to the files. Mapillary offers simple photographs and spherical panoramics. Panoramics are marked as such and the panoramic viewer template viewer is automatically added to these files when uploaded.
The upload is processed even when the user is offline.
In addition, it is possible to categorize Mapillary images by date. To do so, you can add the category Mapillary photographs taken on YYYY-MM-DD to the category of the uploaded batch. If the entered category is red, you can create it by typing {{Mapillary photographs taken on navbox}} into the source code.
As Mapillary offers captured imagery across space and time, it may also covers imagery during events or contains imagery of buildings and structures that don't exist anymore. If you find images belonging to a specific event, you can create the category Photographs from Mapillary during <EVENT> or similar. This new category belongs to the mothercategory Category:Photographs from Mapillary by event. Imagery of destroyed or otherwise removed motifs belongs to Category:Photographs of former structures from Mapillary.
